uterine atony
Postpartum muscular failure
Uterine atony is the failure of the uterus to contract properly after childbirth.
The uterine muscles normally tighten to compress blood vessels and stop bleeding where the placenta detached.
When this contraction fails, the result can be severe postpartum hemorrhage—the leading cause of maternal death worldwide.
The obstetrician recognized uterine atony and began uterine massage immediately.
