tonicity

Solution concentration gradient

Tonicity refers to the state of tension or responsiveness in living tissue, particularly muscles.

In physiology, it describes the normal slight tension present in resting muscles that keeps them ready for action.

In chemistry and biology, tonicity characterizes a solution's ability to cause water movement across a cell membrane—a hypertonic solution draws water out of cells, while a hypotonic one causes water to flow in.

The tonicity of the saline solution must match the patient's blood.
