underweighting

Giving too little

Underweighting is giving something less emphasis or importance than it deserves or than some standard suggests.

In investing, to underweight a stock or sector is to hold less of it than its share in a benchmark index: The fund is underweighting technology stocks.

More broadly, underweighting applies to any analysis where factors receive proportionally less consideration: Critics accused the study of underweighting environmental costs.
