overweighting

Giving disproportionate importance

Overweighting is giving something more importance or emphasis than it deserves, or more than other factors receive.

In finance, overweighting a stock or sector means allocating a larger percentage of a portfolio to it than a benchmark index would: The fund is overweighting tech stocks.

In statistics and research, overweighting adjusts data to amplify certain responses: The poll overweighted rural voters.
