overstressing

Putting too much weight

Overstressing means placing too much emphasis or strain on something.

You can overstress a point by repeating it until listeners tune out, or overstress a muscle by pushing beyond its limits.

In engineering, overstressing a material means loading it past safe tolerances: The beam failed from overstressing.

The word works for both physical strain and rhetorical excess.
