underglazes
Pre-firing pottery colors
Underglazes are pigments or colored decorations applied to pottery or ceramics before the glaze coat is added and the piece is fired.
Because the color sits beneath the protective glaze layer, underglaze designs are durable and won't wear away with use or washing.
The technique allows for detailed painted designs, from simple brushwork to elaborate scenes, that become permanently fused into the ceramic surface.
She painted the floral pattern with underglazes before dipping the bowl in clear glaze.
