underglaze painting
Pre-firing pottery technique
Underglaze painting is a ceramic decoration technique where pigments are applied directly to unfired or bisque-fired clay before the glaze coat is added.
The subsequent glaze firing fuses the colors permanently beneath a protective glassy surface.
This produces durable decoration that won't wear away, unlike overglaze work which sits atop the glaze and can chip or fade: The blue-and-white porcelain features traditional underglaze painting.
