trustbusting

Breaking corporate giants

Trustbusting is government action to break up monopolies and large corporate combinations that restrict competition.

The term dates to the early twentieth century, when U.S. presidents like Theodore Roosevelt pursued antitrust lawsuits against powerful industrial trusts: Roosevelt earned his reputation as a trustbuster by taking on Standard Oil.

The word still appears in discussions of corporate regulation and market concentration.
