price-fixing
Illegal market manipulation
Price-fixing is an illegal agreement between competitors to set prices rather than let market forces determine them.
Companies that should be competing instead collude to keep prices artificially high: The oil companies were convicted of price-fixing.
The term also applies to governments setting prices by decree, which may be legal but is often economically controversial.
