trocar

Cavity puncture instrument

A trocar is a sharp-pointed surgical instrument fitted inside a hollow tube (cannula), used to puncture body cavities and withdraw fluid or insert other instruments.

The point creates the opening; the cannula remains in place as a channel.

Trocars are essential in laparoscopic surgery, where small incisions allow cameras and tools to enter the abdomen: The surgeon inserted the first trocar near the navel.
