pneumoperitoneum
Gas in belly-cavity
Pneumoperitoneum is the presence of air or gas in the abdominal cavity, the space between the abdominal wall and the internal organs.
It occurs deliberately during laparoscopic surgery, when the abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide to create working space: The surgeon established pneumoperitoneum before inserting the camera.
When occurring spontaneously, it usually signals a perforated organ and constitutes a surgical emergency.
