trembles
Quivers with fear
Trembles is a disease of livestock, especially cattle, caused by eating white snakeroot or rayless goldenrod.
The plants contain a toxin that causes muscle tremors, weakness, and often death.
Humans can contract milk sickness from drinking milk or eating meat from affected animals—a common cause of death on the American frontier before the source was identified.
