tree pit

Urban trunk basin

A tree pit is the opening cut into a sidewalk or paved surface where a street tree grows, typically a small square or rectangular area of exposed soil surrounded by concrete or stone.

These pits allow urban trees access to water and air while protecting their roots.

Tree pits are often covered with metal grates or filled with mulch, and in some cities they become miniature gardens tended by residents.

The city expanded the tree pits along the avenue to give the maples more room to grow.
