traveling players
Itinerant theater company
Traveling players are itinerant actors or performers who move from town to town staging theatrical productions.
Before permanent theaters became widespread, such troupes brought entertainment to communities that lacked their own venues: The traveling players set up their stage in the village square.
The term evokes premodern or early modern theater, when acting companies toured with minimal props and costumes, performing in inns, market squares, or noble halls.
