topee

Colonial sun hat

A topee is a pith helmet—a lightweight, rigid sun hat made from the dried pith of certain plants, worn in tropical climates.

The word comes from Hindi and was particularly associated with British colonial wear in India and Africa: The explorer adjusted his topee against the midday sun.

Also spelled topi.
