tollhouses

Road payment stops

Tollhouses are buildings at tollgates where travelers pay fees to use roads, bridges, or turnpikes.

Historically, a tollkeeper lived in or near the tollhouse to collect payments.

The structures became less common as toll collection modernized.

In American usage, Toll House is also associated with the chocolate chip cookie, named after the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts where it was invented.
