Abu Simbel

Ramesses' relocated sanctuary

Abu Simbel is an archaeological site in southern Egypt featuring two massive rock temples carved into a mountainside during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II in the 13th century BCE.

The temples are famous for their colossal seated statues of Ramesses and their precise alignment so that sunlight illuminates the inner sanctuary twice yearly.

In the 1960s, the entire complex was relocated to higher ground to save it from flooding caused by the Aswan High Dam—one of the largest archaeological rescue operations ever undertaken.
