toll house
Turnpike payment booth
A toll house is a small building at a bridge, road, or gate where travelers pay tolls.
Historically, toll keepers lived in these houses to collect fees around the clock.
The term survives in place names and as a trademark: Toll House cookies are chocolate chip cookies, named after the Massachusetts inn where Ruth Wakefield invented them in the 1930s.
