historic marker
Roadside heritage plaque
A historic marker is a sign or plaque placed at a location of historical significance, identifying what happened there or who lived there.
Typically erected by government agencies or historical societies, they appear along roadsides, at battlefields, birthplaces, and sites of notable events: We stopped to read the historic marker about the 1862 skirmish.
