time out

Coach's called break

Time out is a pause or break from activity.

In sports, a time out is a brief stoppage requested by a team to strategize or rest: The coach called a time out with thirty seconds left.

For children, a time out is a disciplinary measure—removal from activity to calm down or reflect on misbehavior.

More broadly, taking a time out means stepping back from any situation: Let's take a time out and revisit this tomorrow.
