tiltrotor

Convertible flight system

A tiltrotor is an aircraft that combines features of helicopters and fixed-wing planes by using rotors that can pivot between vertical and horizontal positions.

When the rotors point upward, the craft can take off, land, and hover like a helicopter; when tilted forward, it flies like a conventional airplane with greater speed and range.

The V-22 Osprey, used by the U.S. military, is the most widely known tiltrotor aircraft.
