through-hike

Complete trail traverse

A through-hike is a continuous end-to-end journey along a long-distance trail, typically completed in a single season: She through-hiked the Appalachian Trail in five months.

The term distinguishes itself from section hiking, where the same trail is completed in segments over multiple trips.

Someone undertaking such a journey is a through-hiker or thru-hiker.

The spelling thru-hike is equally common.
