thermite

Iron oxide, aluminum

Thermite is a pyrotechnic mixture of metal powder (usually aluminum) and metal oxide that burns at extremely high temperatures—hot enough to melt through steel.

Used industrially for welding railroad tracks and cutting metal, it also appears in incendiary weapons.

Once ignited, thermite cannot be extinguished with water: The thermite cut through the lock in seconds.
