test tube baby
Lab-conceived child
A test tube baby is a child conceived through in vitro fertilization—where egg and sperm are combined in a laboratory dish rather than inside the body.
The term dates from the late 1970s when the technology was new and sensational.
It now sounds dated or slightly disparaging; IVF baby is more neutral.
