takeover bid
Corporate buyout proposal
A takeover bid is a formal offer to purchase enough shares of a company to gain controlling interest, typically made directly to shareholders rather than through normal stock trading.
The bid may be friendly, with management's approval, or hostile, against the board's wishes: The company rejected the hostile takeover bid.
A successful bid usually requires acquiring a majority stake.
