schemes
Devious long-term plots
Schemes are plans or arrangements, often with a suggestion of cleverness or cunning: a get-rich-quick scheme, a scheme to defraud investors.
The word carries a whiff of suspicion in American English—schemes sound underhanded.
In British usage, scheme is more neutral, referring to official programs: a pension scheme, a housing scheme.
To scheme is to plot or plan, usually with self-interested motives.
