tender offer
Stock acquisition bid
A tender offer is a public proposal to buy shares of a company directly from its shareholders, typically at a premium above market price.
Companies or investors make tender offers to acquire a controlling stake, often as part of a hostile takeover: The board urged shareholders to reject the tender offer.
The term comes from shareholders being invited to "tender" (formally offer) their shares for purchase.
