air bladder

Fish flotation device

An air bladder is a gas-filled sac in fish that controls buoyancy, allowing them to rise or sink without expending energy swimming.

Also called a swim bladder.

The term extends to similar inflatable structures in other organisms, such as the float chambers in seaweed that keep fronds near the water's surface.
