swamp rat
Wetland furry dweller
A swamp rat is any of various rodents that inhabit swampy or marshy areas, particularly the nutria or muskrat.
The term also serves as a derogatory label for people who live in swamplands or bayous, especially in the American South: Those swamp rats have been poaching gators again.
It can imply someone is backward, uncivilized, or untrustworthy.
