supercolliders
Atom collision machines
Supercolliders are massive particle accelerators that smash subatomic particles together at near-light speeds to study fundamental physics.
The term usually refers to circular machines miles in circumference, where particles gain energy through repeated acceleration before collision.
The most famous is CERN's Large Hadron Collider, which confirmed the Higgs boson in 2012.
The canceled Superconducting Super Collider in Texas would have been even larger.
