subshrub

Low woody perennial

A subshrub is a plant with a woody base but soft, herbaceous upper stems that die back seasonally.

It occupies the middle ground between true shrubs and perennial herbs—lavender, thyme, and sagebrush are typical examples.

Also called a suffrutex.
