subsetting

Selecting data subgroups

Subsetting is the process of selecting a portion of a larger set based on specific criteria.

In statistics and data analysis, subsetting extracts rows or columns from a dataset that meet certain conditions: We subsetted the data to include only participants over age 65.

The term appears frequently in programming contexts, where it describes filtering arrays, tables, or other data structures to work with a manageable or relevant portion rather than the whole.
