subluminal
Slower than light
Subluminal means slower than the speed of light.
The term appears in physics discussions contrasting ordinary matter and energy with light itself: All spacecraft travel at subluminal speeds.
It's the opposite of superluminal, which describes hypothetical faster-than-light phenomena.
In practice, subluminal covers everything in everyday experience—only light and other electromagnetic radiation travel at light speed.
