subdialect

Dialect within dialect

A subdialect is a variety within a dialect—a finer linguistic division based on region, social group, or other factors.

If Southern American English is a dialect, the speech of coastal South Carolina might be a subdialect.

The term acknowledges that dialect boundaries are nested and somewhat arbitrary: What counts as a dialect versus a subdialect depends on who's drawing the lines.
