stuffing-box

Packing gland housing

A stuffing-box is a mechanical seal that prevents leakage around a moving shaft or rod where it passes through a stationary housing.

Packing material—historically greased rope or hemp, now often synthetic—is compressed around the shaft to create a tight seal while still allowing movement.

Common on pumps, valves, and boat propeller shafts: The stuffing-box was leaking and needed repacking.
