straight-eight
Eight-cylinder inline configuration
A straight-eight is an internal combustion engine with eight cylinders arranged in a single row, rather than in a V configuration.
Common in luxury American cars from the 1920s through the 1950s, the design offered smooth operation but required a long hood.
The Packard's straight-eight purred like a sewing machine.
Now largely obsolete, replaced by the more compact V8.
