firing order
Engine timing pattern
Firing order is the sequence in which cylinders ignite in an internal combustion engine.
Engineers design firing orders to minimize vibration and distribute stress evenly across the crankshaft: The mechanic checked the firing order when the engine started misfiring.
Different engines have different firing orders—a common four-cylinder sequence is 1-3-4-2.
