outstanding shares
Publicly held equity
Outstanding shares are the total number of a company's stock currently held by all shareholders, including institutional investors, company insiders, and the public.
This figure excludes treasury stock—shares the company has repurchased and holds itself.
Outstanding shares matter because they determine earnings per share and voting power: The company has 50 million outstanding shares.
The number fluctuates as companies issue new stock or buy back existing shares.
