stellar populations
Galactic age cohorts
Stellar populations are classifications of stars based on their age, chemical composition, and location within a galaxy.
Population I stars are younger, metal-rich, and found in galactic disks and spiral arms.
Population II stars are older, metal-poor, and occupy galactic halos and globular clusters.
The distinction helps astronomers understand galactic structure and stellar evolution: The bulge contains mostly Population II stars.
