red giants
Swollen dying suns
Red giants are stars in a late stage of evolution, having exhausted the hydrogen fuel in their cores and expanded to enormous size—sometimes hundreds of times their original diameter.
The outer layers cool as they expand, giving these stars their characteristic reddish color.
Our sun will become a red giant in about five billion years, swelling to engulf Mercury and Venus.
