split pins
Bendable metal fasteners
Split pins are small metal fasteners with two prongs that spread apart after insertion through a hole, preventing the pin from backing out.
They secure wheels on axles, hold cotter pins in place, or fasten components that need occasional disassembly.
Also called cotter pins in American usage.
The mechanic bent back the split pin to lock the castle nut.
