lag bolts

Hex-headed wood screws

Lag bolts are heavy-duty fasteners with coarse threads designed to grip wood, featuring a hexagonal head turned with a wrench rather than a screwdriver.

They're used where ordinary screws lack sufficient holding power: attaching lumber to posts, securing ledger boards, mounting heavy fixtures.

Also called lag screws.
