mortal coil

This bodily life

Mortal coil is a literary phrase for the turmoil and troubles of earthly life.

It comes from Shakespeare's Hamlet—"when we have shuffled off this mortal coil"—where shuffling off means dying.

The phrase now appears almost exclusively in reference to death: She shuffled off this mortal coil at ninety-three.

Outside this context, coil is archaic for commotion or fuss.
