soundposts

Luthier's internal braces

A soundpost is a small wooden dowel inside a violin, cello, or similar stringed instrument, wedged vertically between the top and back plates near the bridge.

It transmits vibrations between the plates and provides structural support, critically affecting the instrument's tone and volume.

Adjusting the soundpost's position is a delicate task that can dramatically alter an instrument's sound.
