sou'wester

Sailor's rain hat

A sou'wester is a waterproof hat with a wide brim that slopes down in back, designed to protect sailors from rain and spray.

The name comes from the southwest wind that often brings storms.

By extension, sou'wester can refer to the wind itself or a storm coming from that direction: The fishing boats headed in before the sou'wester hit.
