southwester

Waterproof wide-brimmed hat

A southwester is a strong wind or storm blowing from the southwest.

The term also names the waterproof hat worn by sailors in such weather—a sou'wester with a broad brim sloping down in back to shed rain: The fishermen donned their southwesters as the storm approached.
