sodbusting

First plow cuts

Sodbusting is breaking up grassland soil for cultivation, especially the first plowing of virgin prairie.

The term evokes American frontier agriculture, when settlers converted the Great Plains from grazing land to farms: The sodbusters transformed the prairie into wheat fields.

The practice later contributed to the Dust Bowl when drought exposed overworked soil.
