fallowing

Land taking breaks

Fallowing is the practice of leaving agricultural land unplanted for a season or more, allowing the soil to rest and recover its fertility.

A field left in this state is said to be lying fallow.

The practice dates back centuries as farmers observed that rested land produced better yields.

Fallowing also extends metaphorically to periods of creative or intellectual rest: After the project ended, she spent months fallowing before starting something new.
