signal to noise
Meaningful amid meaningless
Signal to noise is the ratio of meaningful information to irrelevant or distracting content.
The term comes from electronics, where it measures how much useful signal exists relative to background interference.
In general use, it evaluates communication quality: The signal-to-noise ratio in that meeting was terrible—two hours for ten minutes of actual decisions.
High signal to noise means concentrated value; low signal to noise means wading through clutter.
