sickle cells
Curved blood corpuscles
Sickle cells are red blood cells that have become crescent-shaped rather than round.
This abnormal shape results from a genetic mutation affecting hemoglobin, causing cells to become rigid and sticky.
Sickle cells can block blood flow, leading to pain and organ damage.
The condition is called sickle cell disease or sickle cell anemia: She was diagnosed with sickle cell as a child.
